Thermoelectric, Peltier Modules

Thermoelectric, Peltier Modules available from Stock
AMS Technologies provides an exceptionally broad and comprehensive range of thermoelectric coolers TEC (Peltier) modules available from stock. This large number of preferred standard thermoelectric cooler modules available off the shelf for our customers are ideal for proof of concepts, fast turnaround design-ins and smaller volume batches. Below, you can utilize several filter functions for selecting the standard TEC module you are looking for. Please also download our thermoelectric coolers brochure for a comprehensive overview including all relevant parameters.

Most of the modules are rectangular in shape. Our portfolio includes square modules with edge lengths ranging from 11.5 x 11.5 mm up to 62 x 62 mm – with some models featuring a center hole – as well as rectangular models in the dimensions 15 x 30 mm, 22 x 19 mm25 x 50 mm and 40 x 20 mmRound TECs with a diameter of 24 mm and a 9.8 mm center hole are also available from stock. The modules’ height or thickness can be as low as 1.72 mm, but also as high as 8.8 mm.

Maximum achievable temperature differences between the Peltier module’s hot and cold side (dTmax) range from 68 K to 83 K, and the maximum cooling capacities (Qmax) of the thermoelectric coolers, defined at maximum current through the TEC at zero temperature difference, start at 4.6 W and go all the way up to 229 W.

Product Portfolio
Our portfolio of thermoelectric modules comprises a wide range of single-stage thermoelectric coolers that can be used for industrial applications. These TECs provide high efficiency, reliability, and performance accuracy. They solve most of the tasks of industrial cooling and thermo-stabilizing and are subdivided by design to high-efficiency, standard, one or two sections, round, square or rectangular shape ones, with or without a hole.

A series of thermoelectric modules for consumer devices is also available, designed to be used in domestic devices and other consumer applications, oriented towards mass production. These high-performance TEC coolers are optimized for 12 VDC power supply and allow the customer to increase the rate of cooling and to reach a larger temperature difference in relation to the environment.

The series of multistage thermoelectric coolers (TECs) is useful when one-stage TECs cannot provide the required temperature difference. With additional stages, these TECs increase the achievable ΔТ up to 140 K and deliver unique cooling capacities up to 95 W.

Rectangular small thermoelectric coolers are available either as single-stage components with dimensions from really tiny 1.2 × 1.8 mm to somewhat larger 21 × 21 mm and heights from 1.1 to 4.1 mm, providing maximum temperature difference up to 76 K, or in multi-stage versions from two to five cascades with maximum temperature differences between its cold and hot side of up to 130 K. Here you can find cascade TECs with standard pyramidal design, TECs with enlarged surface of the top cascade (cold side) to work with relatively big cooled objects as well as linear cascade TECs, especially designed for deep cooling of long objects like CCDs or detector arrays. Please download our dedicated small thermoelectric coolers brochure for a comprehensive overview of our small TEC series.

A dedicated series of micro modules for optoelectronics can be used as mini and micro coolers for direct cooling (and freezing) and temperature stabilization of small size temperature-sensitive optoelectronics as well as other electronic components and devices. These micro TEC coolers can be directly integrated into standard devices e.g. ТО (ТО3, ТО8 etc.), HHL, DIL, Butterfly or any other kind of special packaging options.

With our series of thermoelectric generating modules (TGMs) it is possible to harvest up to several Watts DC from a temperature difference between the module’s hot and cold sides of 100°С.

Our manufacturing partners can build on decades of expertise in thermoelectricity and are constantly refining the material compositions, the semi-automated production of their highest quality modules as well as the assembly and finishing of complete units. Based on and beyond our standard portfolio, we provide extensive development services in cooperation with our suppliers to define, design and manufacture custom thermoelectric solutions for medical equipment, instrumentation, transportation and other applications. Get in touch with the AMS Technologies thermoelectrics experts to discuss your customized TEC solution tailored to your project’s requirements.

For drive and control of our thermoelectric, Peltier modules, AMS Technologies carries a broad range of dedicated TEC temperature controllersAnalog and digital TEC drivers with PI (proportional, integral) or PID (proportional, integral, derivative) type of control are available. Our comprehensive inventory of TEC temperature controllers and drivers comprises systems for PCBchassis or benchtop mount, providing TEC drive currents ranging from 1.5 A all the way to an impressive 28 A. In combination with thermistor or RTD temperature sensors, these devices are able to control the TEC’s temperature very precisely – some models can even provide temperature regulation down to <0.001°C.

Complementing our range of TEC modules and TEC temperature controllers, we offer a complete thermoelectric solutions portfolio, including further components like heat sinks or fans, but also thermal management assemblies (air-to-air, liquid-to-air, plate-to-air). Furthermore, thermoelectric recirculating chillers are available with extraordinarily high efficiency and quiet operation.

If you can’t find an off-the-shelf device or system that meets your thermal management needs, please contact the AMS Technologies thermal management experts – together with our suppliers we can create a temperature control solution tailored to your requirements. We guarantee that we can provide a solution to any thermal management issue, no matter how complex.

Definition
A thermoelectric module, thermoelectric cooler (TEC), Peltier module or Peltier cooler is an active solid-state heat pump that uses electrical energy to transfer heat from one side of the component to the other. In cooling mode, a DC voltage is applied to the component and, due to the Peltier effect of the material, a temperature difference builds up between the two outer surfaces – with one side getting cooler while the other heats up.

To achieve larger temperature differences, several thermoelectric coolers can be cascaded, which, however, reduces the overall efficiency. In addition to geometric parameters such as angular or round shape, dimensions of the surfaces, thickness of the element or possible mounting holes, other typical characteristic values of thermoelectric modules are, for example, the maximum achievable temperature difference, the maximum operating voltage or the maximum electrical power consumption.

Thermoelectric modules are made up of a large number of individual semiconducting "pillars". Between two usually ceramic thermally conductive plates, one n-type and one p-type semiconducting pillar are arranged next to each other in such a way that they are thermally parallel and electrically usually connected in series.

Although thermoelectric or Peltier technology is used for cooling in most cases, thermoelectric modules can be used for cooling or heating, depending on the direction of the current.

Compared to vapor compression refrigeration, thermoelectric cooling is less efficient but has some important advantages such as no moving parts, no potentially hazardous fluids or refrigerants and thus no risk of leaks, but also long life, low maintenance, compact design and flexible dimensions. In addition, the thermal performance is directly dependent on the value of the supply current, so a thermoelectric element can be controlled very precisely by controlling this electrical current.

Peltier elements can also be used as thermoelectric generators, whereby one side is exposed to a higher temperature than the other – as a result, a voltage is formed between the two sides (Seebeck effect).

Thermoelectric systems require careful design, proper selection of components and special skills for assembly. Only top suppliers – like the ones AMS Technologies works with – have the necessary expertise in thermoelectricity to constantly improve production and assembly processes resulting in highest-quality modules and units.
