Non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques that can measure both surface and subsurface defects are of critical importance in evaluating the integrity of composites and plastics. General Photonics’ OTS-1000 composite material scanner is a high resolution (lateral), rapid, and non-contact optical transmission scanning system specifically designed for quantitative NDE of such components.
OTS-1000 incorporates the latest techniques for analyzing laser radiation passing through translucent material to offer high resolution, fast, quantitative non-destructive testing of plastics and fiberglass composites. Materials with low attenuation in either ultraviolet (FUV to NUV), visible, or infrared (NIR to FIR) spectra are suitable for inspection.
The OTS-1000 uses lasers to radiate samples under test, then processes the transmitted power data to produce images and useful statistics such as number of deliminations, size of voids, contaminants and filler distribution. By comparison to legacy systems based on ultrasonic, X-ray or thermal imaging, the OTS-1000 is less than half the cost, easier to use and uses less than 200 W.
Researchers will find the basic OTS-1000 products useful for analysis and application development. The system comes with integrated software, which provides more detailed information about defects, such as the number of delaminations in the cross-section of the sample. A variety of application programs allows the OTS-1000 to be used by technicians for specialized non-destructive testing.
