DPSS Lasers

Product Portfolio
AMS Technologies’ portfolio of diode-pumped solid state (DPSS) lasers comprises a selection of CW and pulsed systems, including frequency-doubled (532 nm) and frequency-tripled (355 nm) models, as well as actively and passively Q-switched DPSS lasers at 1064, 532, 355 and 349 nm. For a detailed listing of available DPSS lasers including technical parameters, please download the AMS Technologies DPSS lasers brochure.

The series of actively Q-switched DPSS lasers provides a short-pulse output (pulse widths <2 ns) at repetition rates from single shot up to >50 kHz with very low jitter. This series features the fundamental YAG wavelength at 1064 nm and harmonics down to 355 nm. Their compact design allows the lasers to be easily integrated into scientific instrumentation.

AMS Technologies also carries DPSS lasers that emit very short laser pulses, which are particularly suitable for multispectral photoacoustic imaging. Using sophisticated technology, these lasers can switch from pulse to pulse between four wavelengths in the visible range with a very high pulse repetition frequency of 2 kHz.

Various types of sub-nanosecond DPSS lasers are available:

AMS Technologies' DPSS laser systems are developed for industrial applications primarily for use in the materials processing and microelectrics markets for flat panel displays, microelectronics, automotive and aerospace sectors.

Definition
DPSS is the acronym for "Diode-Pumped Solid-State" – a DPSS laser is a solid-state laser that is pumped by the light emitted from laser diodes.

Usually, DPSS lasers use a YAG (Yttrium Aluminium Garnet) solid-state laser crystal in disc, plate, fiber or rod shape, which is doped with ytterbium, neodymium or erbium. However, there are also DPSS lasers based on other host crystals.

Depending on the doping, different pump and emission wavelengths can be realised:

  • Ytterbium: Diode Laser Pump Wavelength at 930 nm to 945 nm, Emission of the DPSS Laser at 1029 nm
  • Neodymium: Diode Laser Pump Wavelength 808 nm or 888 nm, Emission of the DPSS Laser at 1064 nm
  • Erbium: Diode Laser Pump Wavelength 980 nm, DPSS Laser Emission at 1550 nm

DPSS lasers are increasingly replacing the solid-state lasers commonly used to date, which are pumped by gas discharge lamps. Compared to pumping with gas discharge lamps, pumping with diode laser radiation offers several advantages such as a higher electrical-optical efficiency, pumping of the laser medium exclusively with the required wavelength (and thus less heat loss), higher power density and beam quality or a longer service life.

High-energy pulsed DPSS laser systems, with their effective photon-material interaction, are predestined for applications in materials processing, while lower-power CW DPSS laser systems are better suited for flow cytometry, biophotonics and other biomedical applications.
