Fiber Bundles, Assemblies

Product Portfolio
AMS Technologies’ broad portfolio of fiber optic assemblies ranges from single fiber cables terminated with industry standard connectors at both ends and sheathed with a flexible material, to multi-fiber bundles consisting of multiple inputs and/or outputs, each with different cross-sections and geometries, each requiring a custom machined end-fitting and a durable outer sheath to protect the assembly from damage.

Our bundled assemblies are available with numerical apertures from 0.12 to 0.66, with the widest range of numerical apertures, custom and standard end-fittings/connectors and outer jackets to tailor a product to your technical and economic requisites. Our high temperature assemblies use aluminium or gold coated fiber and a combination of specialized assembly techniques to provide a solution for optical sensing in sealed high temperature environments.

Extremely tight tolerance, one-dimensional (V-Grooves) and two-dimensional fiber arrays range from a few fibers to thousands of fibers depending on the application. An additional series of V-Groove arrays is manufactured using precision silicon wafer V-Groove technology or Pyrex V-Groove in conjunction with a Pyrex lid, enabling sub-micron alignment accuracy with UV cure attachment capabilities.

Fiber bundles and assemblies are designed and manufactured using a broad variety of optical fiber types, ranging from pure silica (core and clad) or silica core / plastic clad fibers to borosilicate glass fibers, plastic optical fibers, fluoride fibers, chalcogenide fibers, doped fibers or polarization maintaining fibers.

Numerical apertures of the optical fibers in a bundle or assembly can vary, and the fibers can be equipped with the widest range of custom and standard end-fittings, connectors and outer jackets to tailor a product to the customer’s technical and economic requirements. For high temperature applications, some fiber types in a bundle or assembly can be metal (aluminium or gold) coated on request.

Additionally, fibers can be equipped on demand with anti-reflective technology like the patented RARe Motheye technology that enhances fiber transmission performance and significantly increases the damage threshold over a large wavelength range.

Our fiber bundles and assemblies can be manufactured to your requirements and specifications – get in touch with the AMS Technologies fiber experts today to discuss your customized fiber bundle or assembly solution.

Related Products
If you are looking for single patch cables rather than bundles, AMS Technologies carries a broad range of single mode (SM)multi mode (MM) and polarization maintaining (PM) patch cables, either in various standard configurations or customizable to your requirements.

AMS Technologies offers an array of off-the-shelf mating sleeves or bulkhead receptacles. In our portfolio you will also find a large selection of cleaning tools for fiber connectors as well as for the inspection of your connectors.

Definition
Fiber bundles are manufactured by bundling more fibers (of which each can be a different kind of fiber, terminated with a different connector) together and mounting them in a common outer buffer and/or jacket. Depending on the application, different materials for buffers and jackets are possible – like metal jackets for harsh environments. Break-out bundles are formed by fibers with different lengths.

A fiber assembly is defined as “a length of fiber optic cable that has been terminated with a connector, pigtail or other component”. Glass fibers can be arranged in various configurations, forming fiber assemblies for many different applications. Mechanical fixtures or V-Grooves are used for building such assemblies, allowing to fix the fibers in lines or other geometrical arrangements.

Applications
Typical areas of application for fiber bundles and assemblies range from scientific applications like spectroscopy, chemistry, particle detection, fluorescence excitation, microscope illumination, colorimetry or Raman scattering to industrial applications like high-power laser delivery, remote illumination, reflective sensors, inspection, quality control or smoke detection, to medical applications like laser delivery, diagnostics, endoscopy, flow cytometry, genomics or photodynamic therapy.
