Resistors

Resistors available from Stock
AMS Technologies’ range of resistors available from stock comprises power film resistors in heat sink mountable TO-220 style packages and rated for up to 30 W at +25°C case temperature. Use your thermal design experience with power semiconductors in TO-220 style power packages to help you get the most out of this unique family of power resistors. The thermal design issues are the same where power handling capability is based on the case temperature which is maintained in your design.

Featuring a Micronox® resistance film fired onto a flat ceramic substrate, these resistors provide outstanding “non-inductive” performance at voltages up to 250 V. Available resistance values range from 0.020 Ω to 1.0 KΩ at ±1% (±5% for 0.020 Ω), with a temperature coefficient of -20 to 80 ppm/°C (0 to +300ppm/°C for 0.020 Ω ).

Product Portfolio
AMS Technologies’ broad product portfolio features special resistor technologies with extremely low inductance, rated for especially high power (up to 100 kW), high voltage (up to 48 kV ) or high temperatures (up to +275°C), variants for RF applications, but also components featuring extreme long-term stability (up to 0.025% per 1000 hours in extended load life) or ultra-low temperature coefficients (as low as 2 ppm/°C). Packages range from small surface-mount versions all the way to 1-m-long water-cooled, high- load resistors with 10 cm in diameter. For a detailed overview of our resistors portfolio including the main product features please download our resistors brochure.

General-purpose Axial and Radial Lead Resistors up to 100 W
Our power film resistors are available with extremely low inductance, as well as high voltage and high temperature ratings. They are suitable for the most demanding applications. Resistance values range from 0.005 Ω to 30 MΩ, ideal for applications from current sensing to high voltage. Whether axial leaded types with power ratings up to 22 W, or resistors in heat sink mountable TO-126TO-220 and TO-247 style power package configurations – these components remain reliable in all situations.

High-precision Axial and Radial Lead Resistors
Based on our supplier’s proven Tetrinox® and Micronox® resistance systems, AMS Technologies meets the long-term stability targetprecision tolerance as well as tight temperature coefficient requirements of high-accuracy, high-voltage systems such as TWT power supplies, electron microscopes, X-ray systems, high-resolution CRT displays and geophysical instruments. These resistors achieve low temperature coefficients of typically 25 ppm/°C to 300 ppm/°C, with some ranges featuring even 2 ppm/°C.

High Frequency (HF) Resistors
AMS Technologies supplies a comprehensive range of resistors for use at high frequencies as well as high power levels. Our range of large, non-reactive cermet resistors cooled by air, water or oil is suitable for frequencies well up into the hundreds of MHz domain, with power ratings from 10 W all the way to 100 kW.

General Purpose SMT Resistors up to 25 W
Surface mount technology and high power is not necessarily a contradiction: our family of power film resistors in the D-PAK style surface mount package with its electrically isolated metal tab features resistance values ranging from 0.020 Ω to 1.00 kΩ and is specified for up to 25 W at +25°C. Due to their “non inductive” design, these resistors are ideal for power switching circuits, snubbers or high frequency communications.

High-precision SMT Resistors
AMS Technologies low-resistance precision chip resistors are ideal for current sense tasks in hybrid and SMT applications. They employ technologies like our supplier’s Micronox ® resistance film to achieve values down to 0.01 Ω. Our high-resistance precision chip resistors are available with values from 10 MΩ to 100 MΩ, ideally suited for extremely low signal detection and amplification circuits.

Resistor Networks & Voltage Dividers
Ratio tolerance and ratio performance are key for resistor networks and voltage dividers. Our supplier’s Tetrinox® and Micronox® resistance films enable the necessary ratio performance and stability over time and temperature to be achieved in our precision resistor networks and voltage dividers. For range switching applications we offer precision 3, 4 and 5 decade voltage dividers with ratios from 10:1 to 10000:1. Resistance values from 0.5 Ω to 150 MΩ are available with ratio tolerance values as low as 0.01 % and ratio temperature coefficients down to 2 ppm/°C for voltage ratings up to 15 kV.

Related Products
One application of our resistors is sensing of electrical currents – for high-precision, contactless sensing, AMS Technologies also provides a range of current sensors, including super high performance, lab-grade current transformers allowing non-contact measurement of currents from Microamperes to 20 Kiloamperes, at frequencies ranging from 0.5 Hz to 500 MHz.

In addition to resistors, AMS Technologies carries a broad range of further passive components, including capacitors for many different applications. Our large capacitor product portfolio ranges from ceramic capacitors for HF and high voltage operation and filter or snubber capacitors with polypropylene dielectrics to specialty vacuum/gas capacitors for high energy storage and pulse discharge all the way to capacitors for RF use or water-cooled devices rated to 4,000 kVA.

Definition
Resistors are passive, two-pole electrical components providing a value-defined ohmic resistance in electrical and electronic circuits. A resistor can be used to limit the electric current or to set it to the desired value, to divide current or voltage in a circuit (current divider, voltage divider), to convert the electric current flowing in a circuit branch into a defined voltage for simple current measurement or to convert the power dissipating at the resistor into thermal energy.

The vast majority of resistors are linear components, so the voltage across such linear resistors and the current that flows through them are proportional to each other. Important properties of a resistor are the resistance value, the tolerance (fluctuation of the resistance value due to manufacturing) and the maximum power loss.

Further characteristics are the temperature coefficient (change of the resistance value with temperature, given in ppm (parts per million) per Kelvin, the dielectric strength and the long-term stability, i.e. the change of the resistance value over the lifetime of the component. Parameters such as parasitic inductance and parasitic capacitance are particularly important for high-frequency applications.

Regarding the materials the actual resistor element is made of, metal oxide and cermet (also thick-film) resistors, as well as foil resistors or wire-wound resistors have to be mentioned in addition to the most common carbon or metal film resistors. There are SMD resistors, leaded components with axial or radial leads, especially for through-hole mounting on printed circuit boards, resistors in ceramic housings for higher power dissipation and/or higher temperatures, or bulky designs in large housings for very high currents or high voltages, partly with oil or water cooling for the dissipation of high heat losses.
