Broadband, ASE and Supercontinuum Light Sources

Product Portfolio
AMS Technologies supplies compact and reliable ASE (Amplified Spontaneous Emission) light sources based on lasers, LEDs or SLEDs and featuring high output optical power, low polarization and wide spectral width. Our broadband light sources are suitable for applications like optical fiber sensing, fiber optic gyroscopes, medical and biological imaging, measurement and production of passive devices or defense and military.

The module-style RGB white light laser source uses all-fiber technology for combining multiple lasers and simultaneously maintaining polarization. Just like in the desktop-style RGB white laser sources, red, green and blue laser power is combined into a single multi mode (MM)single mode (SM) or polarization maintaining (PM) optical fiber.

A series of wideband or broadband fiber-coupled light sources is available in a compact, card-mount module form factor with heat sink or as a bench-top system. Compared to halogen light sources, the output spectrum of our full-spectrum LED light sources with SMA connector shows a significantly higher intensity at the blue/UV end. High-performance fiber-coupled broadband light sources based on superluminescent light emitting diodes (SLEDs) can be configured with up to eight SLEDs for an ultra-broadband output. And LED/SLED broadband light sources deliver stable output power in both short term and long term, able to work at CW, internal modulate, and external modulate modes, while our deuterium-halogen full-range light sources provide adequate light between 200 and 2500 nm for nearly all absorbance chemistry applications

Available in bench-top, rackmount or OEM module form factors ASE broadband, low-coherence light sources cover the C-band, L-band, or both the C & L bands together. These sources are ideal instruments for optical component spectral measurement and system compliance testing in manufacturing and R&D environments. Our module-style, flat spectrum C-band ASE source with very low peak-to-peak ripple is very useful for optical signal-to-noise ratio and sensor interrogation applications.

Further ASE broadband light sources come in desktop or miniature size module form factors, also available with output powers up to 16 dB or even 18 dB and based on amplified spontaneous emission in erbium-doped fibers.

The low-coherence C-band (1562 to 1563 nm) flattened ASE laser light source is available in module or benchtop formats, designed for industrial manufacturing and laboratory R&D applications.The C- and L-band (1528 to 1605 nm) flattened ASE source generates radiation by spontaneous emission from a RE-doped optical fiber pumped by 980 nm light in an APC control mode. Module and benchtop variants are available for different needs.

Definition
Based on broadband emitters like tungsten, quartz-tungsten, tungsten-halogen, xenon, mercury-xenon, silicon carbide, silicon nitride or multiple LEDs/SLEDs, broadband light sources cover a very broad optical spectrum with approximately constant intensity.

ASE (Amplified Spontaneous Emission) light sources emit light that is generated by spontaneous emission and then optically amplified by stimulated emission in the direction of the resonator axis. This effect occurs in pumped laser media (often rare-earth-doped optical fibers) and optical amplifiers. ASE light generally has a broad optical spectrum and low coherence. ASE light sources combine high intensity with a broad spectrum and are used, for example, in optical measurement and sensing systems such as optical fiber sensing, gas sensing, OCT or fiber optic gyroscopes.

Supercontinuum light sources emit laser light with an extremely broadened optical spectrum. Compared to normal, quite narrowband laser light, a supercontinuum light source can cover a frequency range of a full octave or more. Supercontinuum light sources are also referred to (though technically not really accurate) as “white lasers”.

For the generation of a supercontinuum mostly non-linear effects are used, which occur when guiding very short laser pulses (in the femtosecond range) of high intensity through optical fibers. In long and very long fibers, supercontinuum light can also be generated by pulses of much longer duration and even continuous wave (CW) radiation. Typical applications for supercontinuum light sources include microscopy and spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography or frequency combs.
